Yet another public sector ideology to slow the nation down
There may be a need for 20 mph zones around schools because of careless driving by parents late to school and other drivers who do not care. Putting 20mph speed limits in other areas will achieve nothing. If an area has poor streets, people are already driving at 20 mph or less. If the road is open and with a 20 mph speed limit, some idiots will still drive in excess. As for the plan to reduce all speed limits across all roads will serve absolutely no purpose. At the Scottish Government's road shows (one in Keith) the public servants giving information admitted that all their casualty reduction estimates were purely that. There is no evidence to show before and after figures other than computer-generated simulations, which will change by the operator's playing with "situations"
These proposed reductions in speed limits will cause anger and frustration, slow down travel, add to the cost of living through longer driving hours, and thus incur costs. increase travel time for buses with no benefits to anybody. For Moray, delivery trucks from Central Scotland will be unable to do the run in a day. Will confuse tourists. I have experienced these changes across Wales and Central Scotland. The Welsh Government has been forced to lift many of these speed limits. They have not saved one accident or life, but created frustration, which can, in severe cases, trigger heart attacks and death that way. Has Moray Council made accident statistics for all speed limit areas public in recent years to see if there is an increase in accidents, especially deaths? Do Government statistics not state that for most areas, road accidents and deaths have decreased over the years? The only problem road is the A9 because the GIvernment has failed in its pledge to make it all dual carriageway. Dualing the A96 will make it safer, not dropping the speed limit.
