Estate Walkabouts 2025

Our annual estate walkabouts are short walks around your neighbourhood with housing staff and elected members to talk about how we can improve your area.

Walkabouts are your chance to:

• Discuss improvement works identified through checks carried out by housing staff (estate audits)
• Suggest new ideas to improve your community spaces

Each year, we have a budget of around £230,000 for estate improvements. This money can be used for things like:

• Fixing or replacing fences
• Repairing shared paths
• Landscaping
• Improving play parks

Please note, we can’t use this money for extra car parking spaces. But we’re happy to hear other ideas to improve shared spaces.

Estate Improvement budget – what you need to know

After each estate walkabout, we review all the suggestions made by community members. We decide which ideas to take forward based on:

• How much they cost
• What will make the biggest positive difference for the area

Where the money comes from

The budget for estate improvements comes from the Housing Revenue Account (HRA). The HRA is a ring-fenced account, which means it can only be used for council housing. It’s funded by the rent paid by council tenants, so it must directly benefit them.

What the budget can’t be used for

We can’t use HRA funds for improvements that mainly benefit:

• Private homeowners
• Commercial properties

This applies even in mixed-tenure estates where council and private homes are side by side.
