Moray Music Centre 2026/27
We are reaching out to you as a valued member of the Moray Music Centre community to seek your input on exploring changes to the programme for the 2026/27 academic year and beyond. We are also reaching out to parents/guardians who may have children that may have a musical interest and potentially be keen to join the Moray Music Centre in the near future for their input.
Moray Music Centre offers an exceptional opportunity for school-aged children and young people who play orchestral or wind/brass band instruments to participate in a regional ensemble. The current programme represents excellent value for money, with a cost of £6.50 per 2-hour session – this is a contribution towards the running costs. Transport to and from Elgin Academy is offered at no additional cost.
Weekly rehearsals between August-March help young musicians to develop their skills and enjoy making music with others from across the region in a supportive and welcoming environment. Participation in an ensemble not only develops a young musician’s instrumental playing, teamwork, and listening skills; but has a positive impact on mental health and develops personal and social skills.
At the Full Council meeting held on 28th January 2026, Officers were asked to explore options and undertake consultation which would enable the Moray Music Centre to operate on a full cost recovery basis for the 2026/27 academic year, ensuring alignment with Council policy and due to the ongoing financial pressures that Local Authorities face.
For the 2024/25 academic year, Moray Council faced a budget pressure of £8,000 in delivering the Music Centre. In 2025/26, this budget pressure is expected to be of a similar level. The main costs associated with running Moray Music Centre are staffing and transport – transport being the largest budget pressure.
