What is Additional Support for Learning?

Every child and young person learns differently. Some need extra support to help them learn, take part in school life or achieve their potential.

In Scotland this is called Additional Support for Learning (ASL). Children and young people who need this support are described as having additional support needs (ASN).

Additional support is based on a child's needs, not on whether they have a diagnosis.

Children may need additional support for many reasons

Learning differences

For example dyslexia, dyscalculia or difficulties with reading, writing or maths.

Neurodevelopmental differences

For example autism or ADHD.

Communication or physical needs

Including speech and language needs, hearing or vision impairment, medical conditions or physical disabilities.

Social, emotional or wellbeing needs

Some children need support because of anxiety, bereavement, family circumstances, interrupted learning or other life experiences.

Support can be short or long term

A child may need support for a short period or throughout their education. Support changes as children's needs change.

Enhanced Provisions

For children and young people who need a more individualised approach to learning and support, an Enhanced Provision may be suitable. Enhanced Provisions in Moray are specialist learning environments within some mainstream schools, offering adapted learning and additional support based on each child or young person's individual needs.

Remember

You do not need a diagnosis before asking for support.

If you are worried about your child, speak to their nursery or school. They will work with you to understand your child's strengths, needs and the support that may help.
