Speeding traffic

There may well be a current speed limit for traffic passing through Cummingston of 30mph, I believe everyone in the village is aware that this is constantly flouted, many considerably well in excess of that speed, at all times of the day and night, and by every type of vehicle, including buses, lorries and large tractors, as well as cars, motorbikes and vans.

When driving at 30mph through the village you are constantly tailgated, or on occasion overtaken.

Neither is it confined to a particular age or demographic of driver, but old and very old drivers, young drivers, both male and female, and surprisingly to me, many with children in the vehicle.

There are 40mph zones at either end of the village, and because it is a straight road running right through the village, many drivers carry on without considering reducing their speed.

The pavements are narrow on both sides of the road, vehicles pass very close to pedestrians, and the wing mirrors of buses and vans passing are a hazard for a pedestrian, it is unnerving to walk on the pavement. If it has been raining, it means vehicles pass through puddles on the road, throw the water up and soak pedestrians, as well as the walls of houses and drives. It is nigh impossible to walk and get by unscathed.

Often there are cars and vans parked on the pavement, and I have seen mothers with pushchairs having to negotiate the road to pass.

Vehicles negotiating their driveways, in or out, have problems entering the traffic stream, or finding the time and space to reverse in, it is dangerous to reverse onto the road and nearly everyone in the village avoids this.

All this is exacerbated by the speeding vehicles who seem to have consideration for no-one.

I am aware that there have been requests in the past, for measures to alleviate the problem, but to date nothing has been done.

I am not opposed to a 20mph speed limit, and would support it.

However I do not believe that of itself it would be adhered to. I believe it must be supported by long overdue traffic control measures, as in other villages, such as speed bumps, and clear signage on the road surface,to make a physical requirement for drivers to slow down.
